Sources of Electricity for Nacogdoches
Nacogdoches electric companies get their electricity from three main types of power; fossil fuels, nuclear, and renewable power.
Fossil Fuels
Coal – In the past coal was the main source of electricity in Nacogdoches. In recent years a combination of regulations, environmental concerns, and the dropping prices of competing sources of power have led to a decline in coal as a source of electricity in Nacogdoches and the rest of Texas.
Natural Gas – Natural gas is the favored fuel for power plants that feed the Texas electricity grid. Technological advances in fracking have led to an abundance of natural gas. Natural gas is also an effective source for electricity because it is easy to ramp up production at a power plant that uses natural gas. This enables grid operators to quickly balance available electricity supply and demand on the grid.
Renewable Energy
Nuclear Power – Nuclear power makes up less than 5% of the electricity capacity for the state of Texas.
Wind Energy – Wind power is the main source of renewable power in Texas. The largest portion of the state’s wind turbines are in west Texas.
Solar – Solar power is a fast growing source of renewable energy in Nacogdoches.
