How are Dallas Electricity Rates Calculated?
Dallas electric companies are free to set their own electricity rates. After all, that is what it means to have a competitive market. But there is a lot more that goes into an electricity rate than meets the eye. Very few electric companies set their electricity rates as an all-in bundled rate. Most often, the advertised rate is an average rate once all of the various costs, fees, and tiered costs are added together. This is why there is usually a different rate for 1000 kWh usage than there is for 2000 kWh usage; even within the same plan.
Here is an example from one plan. There are five cost components that go into the electricity rate calculation:
- Energy Rate = 5.80 ¢ per kWh
- Base Charge = $7.95 per month
- TDU Electric Delivery Charge = $3.42 per month
- TDU Electric Delivery Charge = 3.697 ¢ per kWh
- Credit for Billing cycle for usage greater than 2000 kWh = $40 per month
These are the charges that make up your electric bill. Notice that two of these charges are fixed charges ($7.95 per month and $3.42 per month). These will be the same every month no matter how much or how little electricity you use. As a result of this, your average electricity rate will tend to be lower when you use more kWh because that fixed cost is spread out across more kWh.
One of the items is a credit rather than a cost. Notice this credit kicks as soon as you use 2000 kWh in a month. This has the effect of creating much lower average electricity rate as soon as you hit 2000 kWh in usage.
The average electricity rates for this plan are:
- 8¢/kWh @500 kWh
- 6¢/kWh @1000 kWh
- 1¢/kWh @2000 kWh

Can You Really Save By Shopping Different Electric Companies?
The average Texas household spends about $1,200 on electricity every year. This amount is equal to or higher than what you pay for housing or food. Now, more than ever, it’s important to compare rates from different companies to find the best deal. For most Texans, electricity is a necessary expense that they cannot avoid. However, there are many options available when it comes to selecting an electric company.
When it comes to your electricity bill, you want to make sure you are getting the best possible deal. This is why many residents in Dallas compare electricity rates from different companies before deciding where to purchase service. Electricity plans offer different prices, depending on how often you use energy and your personal power usage habits. Some plans charge more for high usage, while others reward you for using less. Finding the right plan is crucial for avoiding costly overages.
Moving To Dallas? You Will Need To Choose a Cheap Dallas Electric Company.
Dallas is one of the three largest cities in the state of Texas, and in the country, the 9th largest. According to 2017 estimates, the population hit more than 1.3 million people total. And because of its considerable population, the city holds a huge number of highly-skilled technical workers (about 43% of the entire state of Texas within the city). These professionals work in technology, life sciences, semiconductors, and computer science. And some notable Fortune 500 companies are headquartered within the city: ExxonMobil, Southwest Airlines, and Texas Instruments to name a few.
While in the city, there are a lot of things to do for fun. The Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is a favorite of many Dallas natives. In addition, visiting the Sixth Floor Museum, or the American Airlines Center to see a Dallas Mavericks or Stars game, are highly recommended pursuits while in the city. And while you are at it, it is only 19 miles to drive to AT&T stadium to catch a Dallas Cowboys game in Arlington.
And because the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex is such a large area, logically there are a lot of famous people from the area. A few of these include the following: George W. Bush, 43rd President of the United States, and his wife Laura, Clayton Kershaw, a MLB pitcher who plays for the LA Dodgers, and actors/brothers Owen and Luke Wilson. But the list goes on for the amount of well-known people who have grown up or lived in Dallas.

Choosing The Appropriate Electricity Usage Level
Make sure that when you are evaluating electricity rates for various plans you are looking at pricing for the usage level appropriate to the size of your home and your typical electricity usage.
Standard usage levels for plan pricing in Texas are:
- 500 kWh – Representing and average apartment
- 1000 kWh – Representing a small home
- 2000 kWh – Representing a larger home
The structure of many electricity plans can result in a much different average electricity rate for these 3 levels. If you live in an apartment and you are comparing rates based on the 2000 kWh usage rates, you may find yourself choosing a much more expensive electricity plan than you realize.
Luckily, we give you the tools to ensure you are doing a proper comparison. When looking at rates on our electricity rate comparison tool, make sure you have the usage level (found at the top of the plans display) is set properly.

Just about any plan you choose will come with a cancellation fee attached. This excludes month-to-month variable rate plans. Cancellation fees are listed along with the plan in the Vault electricity rate comparison tool. Most providers charge a flat cancellation fee. $150 is a typical cancellation fee for a 12 month plan. Some providers, however, charge an amount for each remaining month on the plan. For example; $20 per month.
If you switch providers before the end of your contract, you are likely to be charged this fee. Having the cheapest electricity in Dallas is great, but not if you get hit with a large cancellation fee by ending the contract early.
Sources of Cheap Electricity in Dallas
There are several sources of power that contribute to the electricity grid that serves Dallas and most of Texas. The Texas electricity grid is separated from the rest of the mainland United States electricity infrastructure.
Natural gas makes up the bulk of the electricity produced in Texas. Coal power plants are also a large source of electricity for Dallas electric companies. However, the influence of coal on the Texas electricity grid is declining year after year due to a number of environmental and economic reasons.
Texas has a growing portfolio of renewable energy sources. Texas has more wind power than any other state. On windy days wind generated electricity can now account for more of the power in the grid than any other source making Texas a leader in green energy production.
Many Dallas electric companies now offer 100% renewable energy electricity plans. As the price of wind and solar continue to drop the electricity rates on these plans can be very competitive. Sometimes green energy plans are cheaper than plans that feature electricity generated from traditional sources.
