Are TXU Rates The Most Expensive Electricity Rates In Texas?

TXU Energy appears to be the most expensive electricity provider in Texas – at least we could not find any company with higher rates.  Just a few months ago they said they were not willing to “chase prices” in order to gain/keep customers.  It is that mentality that is pushing TXU’s parent company to the brink of bankruptcyEnergy Futures Holdings (EFH) purchased TXU in 2006, and TXU has lost money every quarter since.  EFH debt now totals over $40 billion.

TXU Rates Compared to Other Electric Providers

Since the deregulation of our electricity market gave us the power to choose in 2002, Texas consumers have had the luxury of shopping around for their electricity.  Before deregulation you didn’t have a choice of which electricity provider you used. You were assigned a provider based solely on your location.  For example, if you lived in Dallas, you paid TXU for your electricity.  Likewise, Houstonians received their monthly electric bill from Reliant.  You had no choice and no voice in the matter.

Current Lowest Cost Providers in TXU’s Area

Company Term Rate
Bounce 12 Month Learn More
Trieagle 12 Month 8.1¢ Learn More
Champion 12 Month 8.1¢ Learn More
StarTex 12 Month 8.2¢ Learn More

Unfortunately, not everyone in TXU’s area is aware they now have a choice, and TXU takes advantage of that fact.  TXU hopes that they are going to be the only electric company you look towards when needing electricity, so they just throw out a high rate quote and hope you don’t know any better.

But let’s look at the facts.  Currently, TXU’s 12-month residential rates are 19.75% higher than the competition.  And what about their 12-month Free Nights Plan?  The Free Nights Plan is priced a staggering 43.20% higher than competing 12-month electricity plans.  TXU’s month-to-month rate is 47.62% higher than competing introductory monthly rates.

It is no wonder TXU has 800,000 fewer customers than they did just a few years ago.  With rates that are almost 50% higher than those of the completion, TXU is shedding customers at an increasing speed.

  • I have been with txu for almost a year n every month my bill has been 300 to 400 dollars a month. I ask why they tell me they go off of what the computer tells them then when I don’t use my ac or heater ny bill is now 800 dollars with a deposit fee added on. I don’t like this company at all they lie to their customers. They send the bill out late then when u receive it its past the due date n we r late I am very unhappy with them. what can I do about this

  • I am a customer of TXU since April 2013 and their customer service is bad. I have to talk to their supervisor just so I can get my questions answered. Watch out on the flyer about a gift card for $150.00 and $250.00 when you sign up. That is a bait and my frustration is over my head. The supervisor said “it depends in your plan”. Now, when I talked to someone on their 1800 number, they assure you that what is required is just to sign up as a new customer. That is not the case. Oh well, good I only signed up for a year. Never change your carrier for a few penny savings, you will regret!

  • THEY ARE THE WORST. THEY ARE CHEATING THEIR CUSTOMERS, MY BILL DOUBLED IN JAN, BECAUSE WE HAD 3 ICE DAYS. I COULDN’T BELIEVE IT. I CALLED TXU AND THEIR REP WAS RUDE, I ASKED THEM TO CHECK MY METER AND TO THIS DAY THEY HAVEN’T!!! THEY SENT ME A LEAFLET TELLING ME TO SET MY THERMOSTAT AT 68%. I DID AND NOW I HAVE A COLD. WHEN MY CONTRACT IS UP, I’M SWITCHING TO SOMEONE ELSE.

  • Just got a flyer from them with $350BONUS + 3%CachBack + TOTAL satisfaction Guarantee. Out of curiosity checked their website. Oh my…were are TXU getting their prices from? this is a rip off, I am so sorry for their clients. They are listed 9.5c for some of the plans…but when u dig in this is for 2000 usage. same plan charges up 14.7c for 500. I use about 900, so same plan will charge me~14c perkwt. Comparing to Champion (I love them, 8 years so far, straight forward, great customer service and price is right there 5 or 5000, mine always averages about 10.8c) website lists all prices upfront and it lets you select on the top what usage you want. Though prices do not change when i changed usage. Well, people, do not sign up with TXU, shop around.
