Factors Affecting the Electricity Rates In Galveston
In Galveston the electricity rate you pay almost always depends on how much electricity you use each month. This is true even for plans that are labeled as “fixed rate”.
Each electricity provider can charge in any way they want for they want for the electricity plans they sell. The result is often a complex mix of flat fees, per kWh fees, pass through fees, and bill credits. This results in an effective average electricity rate that changes from month to month.
Here is one example of a typical Galveston electricity plan. You can see that it has five different cost items in the formula that determines your electricity bill:
- Energy Rate = 5.80 ¢ per kWh
- Base Charge = $7.95 per month
- TDU Electric Delivery Charge = $3.42 per month
- TDU Electric Delivery Charge = 3.697 ¢ per kWh
- Credit for Billing cycle for usage greater than 2000 kWh = $40 per month
Two of the components of the plan’s pricing are flat fees. One is a base monthly charge of $7.95. The other is a charge for $3.42 per month. This TDU charge is a pass through fee that goes to the transmission and distribution utility (TDU) that delivers the electricity for all electricity providers in your area. These two amounts will be the same each month whether you live in an apartment or a big house.
The $40 bill credit is only applied once you hit the 2000kWh mark for the month.
The result of all this is that you can never really know what your electricity rate is going to be until you know exactly how much electricity you are going to use in a given month (which is impossible). In this case the all-in electricity rate for 2000kWhs is more than 3.5 cents per kWh less than the average rate you would pay at 500 kWh usage.
Commercial electricity rates are not quoted the same way. They only quote the Energy Rate, leaving the TDU and base charge fees off.
