Lea County Electric Cooperative is a nonprofit, member-owned electric company, serving rural parts of West Texas and New Mexico. Although most electric co-ops in Texas were formed in mid- to late-1930’s, this one was founded in 1946. That means that families and business located in the area covered by Lea County Electric Co-op didn’t get electricity until almost 10 years after the majority of the state became connected to the electricity grid.
This electricity provider is an average size co-op, with 16,200 smart meters and 7,000 customers. They have 80 fulltime employees to maintain their 4,300 miles of power lines. They have offices in Lovington (NM), Tatum (NM) and Plains, TX where they accept in-person electric payment. You can pay with cash, check or credit card.
Lea County Electric Co-op belongs to the nationwide group of electric cooperatives known as Touchstone Energy. This 750-cooperative strong electricity company provides several perks to their members. One of those perks is making available the SmartHub account system to the customers of the various co-ops. SmartHub allows customers to view and pay their electricity bills online. This platform also allows its customers to set up AutoPay and Average Billing.
