Why It’s So Important To Compare Electricity Rates
Here in Azle, electricity rates change a lot. There are many factors that affect Texas electricity rates. Natural gas prices and predictions in future movements in natural gas prices play a big role in how electricity is priced in Texas. This is because natural gas is still the most important single source for fueling power plants in Texas.
Weather also plays a big part in electricity rates. This is because hot or extremely cold temperatures can place heavier demand on the grid. This in turn can drive up the spot or day-ahead prices for electricity.
Outages at power plants can affect how much power is available for the grid at any given time. This can also put upward prices on electricity rates.
Generally, consumers are insulated from these short term movements in electricity rates. Assuming you are on a fixed rate electricity plan, you aren’t going to see your rates jump around from day to day. But all of these factors along with others affect how electricity providers price their fixed rate electricity plans.
Providers are constantly trying to win business by offering lower rates than their competition.

How are Azle Electricity Rates Set?
Electric companies in Azle, TX are, for the most part, free to price and structure their electricity plans however they choose to. But in the standard disclosure documentation that is required for every electricity plan sold in Texas they must disclose the average electricity rate for 3 benchmark usage levels (500, 1000, & 2000kWh). This is supposed to give customers an idea of what their rate will be based on how much electricity they typically use in a month.
These three usage levels have become the standard way of comparing when people are shopping for cheap electricity in Azle.
Unfortunately, this gives electricity providers an incentive to structure their plans so that they appear to be much cheaper at exactly these usage levels while being more expensive if you use just a little bit more or a little bit less than the benchmark usage levels.
Here is how they make that happen. This is an example of the cost structure for a plan that has a billing credit which only applies to usage that is greater than 1900 kWh but lower than 2400 kWh for the billing cycle.
- Energy Rate = 5.80 ¢ per kWh
- Base Charge = $7.95 per month
- TDU Electric Delivery Charge = $3.42 per month
- TDU Electric Delivery Charge = 3.697 ¢ per kWh
- Credit for Billing cycle for usage greater than 1900 kWh and less than 2400 kWh = $40 per month
This pricing formula is designed specifically so that the cheapest electricity rate of 8.1¢/kWh occurs if you use 2000 kWh per month. The catch is that if you loss that $40 credit by using too little or too much electricity, your actual rate will be quite a bit higher than 8.1 cents.
