My Georgetown Electricity Plan is Nearly Expired – What Should I Do?
As the expiration date of your current plan approaches, your electricity provider will probably email you, snail mail you, or call you with an offer for a new deal to replace your current plan when it expires. This new plan may have a better or worse rate. That’s going to depend on what the market as a whole is doing and how aggressive the provider is currently being with their own pricing.
Before you commit to anything you should compare the new rate they are offering to the rates on other plans being offered by other Georgetown electricity providers. Chances are you can find a better rate with another provider. If you do find a better rate somewhere else, you can enroll in a new plan with a future start date; as much as 2 months in some cases. When the date arrives, your new provider will handle the switch. There is no need to contact your current provider.

Why Are the Electricity Rates So Cheap in Georgetown?
Georgetown gets its electricity from the ERCOT grid. ERCOT stands for Electric Reliability Council Of Texas. ERCOT is the grid that provides power to most of the state. Texas is unique among the continental states in that it has its own self-contained grid apart from the other two main girds that serve the rest of the country.
Natural gas is now the largest single source of electricity for the grid that provides power to Georgetown. Cheap natural gas has resulted in cheap electricity in Georgetown over the past decade. Natural gas tends to burn cleaner than coal and has dropped in price substantially due to new drilling techniques.
Texas has a healthy market for green energy. Wind turbines in West Texas provide power all the way to Georgetown. Consumers can now choose from a large number of green energy plans that offer 100% renewable sources of electricity.

Don’t Ignore the EFL for Your Electricity Plan
The Electricity Facts Label (EFL) is the documentation required for each electricity plan offered in Texas. In it, you will find all of the details about an electricity plan. In the EFL, you will find all the little details that make up the electricity rate that is advertised. You will find the average electricity rate at 3 standard levels of monthly usage in Georgetown: 500kWh, 1000 kWh, and 2000 kWh hours.
In most cases, the EFL will separately break out the TDU passthrough fees. These are the delivery fees that everyone is charged at a standard rate. It goes to the entity responsible for delivering electricity to your home. The TDU is not your electricity provider. These are usually, though not always broken out as separate items in the EFL.
Often you will see unpleasant surprises in the EFL that could have an unexpected impact on the electricity rate you will pay. Disappearing bill credits is one example of this. It may take the form of a bill credit that applies after your usage exceeds 2000 kWh in a month. This has the effect of driving down the average electricity rate you would pay at 2000 kWh. But it could disappear if, at the end of the month, you used only 1999 kWh your electricity bill could end up being much higher.
You will find other plan details in the EFL include cancellation fees and the percentage of the plan’s electricity that comes from renewable energy sources.
Always review the EFL before deciding on an electricity plan.
