Who Delivers the Cheap Power to Porter?
When you pick an electric company, you are selecting a Retail Electricity Provider (REP). Their role is to purchase electricity from the Texas wholesale electricity market and resell the electricity to you. It is the name of your REP on your electric bill. They set your electricity rate. However, they are not the company responsible for delivering electricity to you.
The responsibility of delivering electricity to Porter homes belongs to the regional utility companies (called TDUs). The TDU for Porter is Oncor. No matter who you buy your power from, Oncor will deliver the power to your home.
Oncor is the utility that maintains the wires and poles in a large part of the state of Texas including Porter. If your lights go out in Porter call Oncor. Oncor passes fees along through your electric bill.
No matter what Retail Electricity Provider you choose, there will be passthrough fees on your electric bill to compensate Oncor for maintaining the lines and delivering the power. These fees are the same for everyone in the Oncor delivery area regardless of your electric company.
Porter No Deposit Electricity Plan Options
If you have been asked to pay a deposit you can’t pay, you have a few options.
You can enroll in a plan with another electricity company. Providers set their own credit requirements. Some companies have easier credit requirements than others.
You can apply to get a waiver from having to pay a deposit. The PUC mandates certain circumstances under which providers have no choice but to wave their requirement for a deposit. They are:
• Proof that you are 65 years of age or older and not currently delinquent in payment for another electric company
• Letter of credit from most recent electricity provider
• Proof of medical indigency
• Proof you are a victim of family violence
Prepaid electricity plans are also a smart way to get around paying a deposit. The plans allow you to get your lights turned on with very little upfront. The money you do put up goes directly to paying for your electricity not a deposit.
