How Are the Electricity Rates Calculated on My Electric Bill?
Electricity rates in Weatherford are mostly set by using a rate formula rather than a straight rate for each kWh of power you use. Even electricity plans marketed as “fixed rate” have rates that can be different from one month to the next based on how much power you use for the month. To understand how this can be, you have to look at the math.
Here is an example of the pricing structure of a real electricity plan recently offered by one of the many Weatherford, TX electric companies. It’s a common type of plans you will find in Texas.
These are the fees listed in the plan’s EFL disclosure document.
- TDU Delivery Charge = $5.47 per month
- TDU Delivery Charge = $0.040716 per kWh
- Energy Charge = $0.0486 per kWh
- Monthly Service Fee = $9.95 per month (per billing cycle for usage less than 1000 kWh)
Let’s apply this rate formula to the typical usage pattern of a Weatherford electricity consumer who averages 1200 kWh per month. Summers in Texas are hot which means air conditioning takes up a lot of power. Springs and falls are mild, while winters are very unpredictable.
This means a customer that averages 1200 kWh per month over the course of the year can use as much as 1800 kWh in summer months and as little as 800 in spring monhts. December could go either way.
With this plan, if you use 800 kWh in April your electricity bill will be $86.87 and your average electricity rate will be 10.9¢.
In July, if you use 1800 kWh, your total bill will be $166.24 which results in an average electricity rate of 9.2¢.
