The city of Gladewater has a population of 6,400. This size makes it the 305th largest city in the state. It resides in both Gregg and Upshur counties on the eastern part of the state. The nearest major cities are Longview (12 miles) and Shreveport (69 miles). Historically, Gladewater was founded as a railroad town (the Texas and Pacific Railway). Some think the city’s name came from the nearby Glade Creek and the resulting Glades that were well known around the parts. The geography of the Glades most likely resulted in its naming. It was first established in 1873 and later incorporated in 1874, but that didn’t stick, and a new charter was made in 1931, many years later.
